City living has its pros and cons without a doubt. With the countless pros of being just minutes from New York comes the cons of being miles from the beach. But if you’re in Hudson County, you don’t need to head to the Parkway or up the B line to Coney Island. Instead, head down to Newport Green in Jersey City for your own little beachfront.
Newport Green is a four acre-wide “waterpark” alongside the Hudson River in downtown Jersey City – in fact, it’s considered the only “sandy urban beach” on the Hudson River. As oasis for all ages, Newport Green is particularly ideal for families and children, donning a large playground and even a carousel. Not to mention, there’s a mini-waterpark/splash pad for those hot days. It resembles what you would think of as the kiddie section of a larger water park, with spouts and fountains splashing up from playground-esque attractions.
Even without children, Newport Green can be an escape away from city life. There’s a stretch of grass that’s an easy spot for you to roll out a picnic blanket or beach towel among the grass the separates the playground area and the beach. The “beach” itself is a stretch of land along the Hudson River, without water access, where you can sit back, relax, and take in the views of the Manhattan skyline. The sandy area is on the smaller side, so make sure when you visit you keep in mind you’ll either be sand-side or grass-side.
If sitting isn’t your style, then check out a number of the amenities throughout the park, such as a turf playing field (#sports), ping pong tables, and a fountain plaza. You can even take a stroll along the walking paths and botanical gardens in the park. The area is also walking distance from many restaurants, shops and places to pick up a coffee or an ice cream.
There are benches, tables, beach chairs and umbrellas scattered around Newport Green, but keep in mind while you may feel like you’re getting away from the city, there are still a lot of other people visiting. Come prepared with our own supplies and you’ll be able to spend a full day beachside in the middle of bustling Jersey City.
The spot is perfect to visit with friends for an afternoon or by yourself. All you need is some sunscreen, snacks and sunglasses to complete your visit. You can even bring your laptop here and get some work done – that’s right, Newport Green even has its own WiFi. I find it to be the perfect spot to grab a blanket and read a book, with the skyline out in front of me, the sunshine on my face and the sand beneath me.
When planning your visit, keep in mind that there are no dogs allowed (sad) and the park closes at dusk. Restrooms are a little scarce, but there are portapotties across the street. Metered parking is available, but if you are driving plan to circle around for a good portion of the morning. Otherwise, head right to a parking garage and walk the rest of the way. It is an easy walk from the Hoboken or you can take a popular Citi Bike and ride over yourself.
No matter what you decide to spend the day doing, be sure to visit Newport Green and find a secret beach tucked away in Jersey City.
