I try not to be super basic – really, I do *she says while typing a blog post watching Netflix and drinking wine*. It just comes so naturally to me. I love an overpriced cappuccino, I still use Snapchat more than anyone I know, I’m obsessed with Target and there’s no place I’d rather spend Sunday mornings than a trendy diner eating the world’s greatest meal – brunch.
My roommate and I are actually on a mission to eat all the avocado toast there is to offer in Hoboken and Jersey City. Luckily, there’s no shortage of avocados in the greater New York City area. Hence: The Brunch Series. Where I give you all the deets on my favorite brunch spots I explore – from East Coast to West Coast and beyond.
First up: Fox & Crow in Jersey City, New Jersey. When I first moved to the area I saw this brightly colored exterior and immediately thought this was a tattoo shop. The artsy design and hole-in-the-wall location actually holds one of Jersey City’s favorites: The little hipster pub and parlour.
On the weekends there’s live music and a great cocktail selection, but I particularly think this is an excellent spot for a trendy brunch (and maybe an Instagram Story or two). There’s a rustic, vintage vibe going on within the interior, complete with hanging light bulbs and tree-lined wallpaper.
The menu is pretty small and they are clear that they aren’t here to make substitutions to your meal – but what they do have is a crafty selection of brunch delicacies whether you want a savory, sweet or light meal.
The avocado toast is obviously my favorite, sans poached egg on top to accommodate my new-ish vegan diet. (Though, I’ve never really liked egg yolks – meh). In my past non-vegan, strictly vegetarian life I’ve also had the sweet ricotta toast, which was an absolute dreamboat if you have a sweet tooth like mine.
You can also get brunch dishes like a pork roll egg and cheese, a brunch burger or even salmon hash. Whatever you chose, you can rest assured it’s going to come out fresh and tasty – and highly Instagrammable.
Now, what brunch is complete without a beverage, amirite? A mimosa is a classic choice and you can’t go wrong, but the Fox and Crow also boasts a Bloody Mary, Bellini and even fresh coffee from another local treasure – Modcup Coffee.
Each time I’ve visited this location, there was never a wait for a table and the food came out in a timely manner. The waitstaff has been courteous without hovering too much, and the vibe there is just really enjoyable. For a very reasonable price and walking distance from many places in The Heights (and the Riverview Farmer’s Market) in Jersey City, Fox & Crow gives you a great meal, a cozy atmosphere and an overall awesome experience.
Have you ever tried Fox & Crow?
